How to Spot Snakes in Kruger
“The only snake I have seen in Kruger is a dead snake”
We hear that alot when discussing snakes in Kruger with people. But if you know where to look, then you will have a much better chance at seeing a snake.
Slow down along streams and scan the low branches above. Snakes like Rock Pythons like to bask in the sun near a water source for a quick getaway. Look for a glistening reflection like in the photo above of a Rock Python seen along the Nwanetsi Road in midday heat.
Scan the warm rocks for a basking snake on warm rocks and on warm asphalt.
Keep a look out when you’re in your rest camp. Although unnerving, you could see a snake in your thatched roof or in a tree.
Birds Mobbing and Dive-Bombing. Look out for birds dive-bombing and mobbing snakes to drive them away from nests.
Alarm calls. Listen out for birds, squirrels and other animals sounding out alarm calls. There could be a snake!
